    何谓英国皇家特许注册建筑师:

    在英国要想以建筑师的名义参与项目和设计方案的话,你必须要获得英国皇家建筑师资格,通过这个资格考试,需要经过一个正统的过程,这个过程最少得花七年的时间。

    七年时间听起来好像很长,但是回想一下七年前你在干什么?三年的高中生活是不是转眼间就过去了?四年前刚刚走进大学校门的情景是不是还像是就在昨天?七年时间并不长,从现在开始努力吧!

    第一步,完成这个阶段的课程一般需要5年的时间,这部分的课程是必须需要通过RIBA英国皇家建筑师协会(RIBA)和建筑师注册委员会(ARB)的认可的。一般情况下这个阶段是可以看做由两个步骤完成。

       第一部分:一般由三年的本科课程组成,课程必须得到英国皇家爱建筑师协会的认可,并具有一年实习经验后,学生才能够在课    程结束后获得英国皇家建筑师协会第一部分(RIBA PART 1)资格证书。(这部分本科课程举例来说,如Shiefield University的A single honours BA Architecture ,A dual honours BA Architecture and Landscape 和A dual honours MEng Structural Engineering and Architecture

       第二部分:学生在完成RIBA PART 1后,再参加一个两到三年的英国皇家建筑师协会第二部分(RIBA PART 2)的课程(advanced undergraduate study),英国很多大学的建筑系或工程系都设有建筑师资格第二部分的课程(如 Shiefild University的MArch in Architecture和MArch in Architecture & Town and Regional Planning),此外,完成课程后,仍然需要具有至少一年的工作经验,才能够获得RIBA PART 2的资格证书

    第二步,一般需要一年到三年的时间,即第一步的5年结束后,还要继续工作一年到三年,即具有专业实践和管理经验后才能通过英国皇家建筑师协会第三部分(RIBA PART 3)的考核,人们通常都是在工作的同时准备第三部分的资格考试。

    学生必须获得英国皇家建筑师第三部分的资格证书(RIBA PART3),才能够正式在建筑师注册委员会(ARB)注册并成为一名英国皇家建筑师协会(RIBA)的特许注册英国皇家建筑师。那么对于那些已经从事建筑这个行业很多年,但是并不打算通过本科或硕士课程获得注册建筑师资格的专业人士,可以采取直接参加资格考试的形式。

    基于我前面所提到的Sheffiled University的有关建筑学的本科和硕士课程,下面详细介绍一下这所学校的这方面课程:

    谢菲尔德大学的建筑学学校所设的本科课程如下:

    A single honours BA Architecture

    A dual honours BA Architecture and Landscape

    A dual honours MEng Structural Engineering and Architecture

    这三个课程都被英国皇家建筑委员会(the Royal Institute of British Architecture) 所认可,而且学生一旦参加这三个课程中的一个,立即会自动成为建筑师注册协会Architects Registration Board (ARB)的一名学生会员。

    在完成本科课程的基础上,学生在获得一部分工作经验以后,仍然可以继续在谢菲尔德大学进修RIBA PART 2 和PART 3的部分,也就是硕士阶段的课程,其硕士阶段课程下设如下几个方向的课程:

    Part 2 Courses

    Professional Practice Course (RIBA Part 3)

    Taught Masters courses

    MPhil and PhD research degrees

    首先,在Part 2 Courses的课程中下设2个主要专业课程,他们是MArch in Architecture (RIBA Part 2)MArch in Architecture and Town & Regional Planning (RIBA Part 2 & RTPI)。其中比较有特色的当属于MArch in Architecture and Town & Regional Planning (RIBA Part 2 & RTPI),因为这个由谢菲尔德大学所提供的课程在英国境内是独一无二的。因为这个课程不仅获得英国皇家建筑师协会的认可,而且还得到英国皇家规划师协会的承认。因此学生通过这个课程不仅能够学到这两个方面的技能,还能够将两者之间的联系加以研究。学生最终不仅获得一个建筑学方面的硕士课程,还能够获得一个有关于城市规划的文学硕士学位。

    其次,在Professional Practice Course (RIBA Part 3)中,学生必须要首先已经完成RIBA PART1 和 PART 2的部分,其次还需要具有3年相关的工作经验才能够申请这个课程,成功完成这个课程后,将能够正式在建筑师注册委员会(ARB)注册并成为一名英国皇家建筑师协会(RIBA)的特许注册英国皇家建筑师。

    再次,在Taught Masters courses中,主要下设了以下3个方面的课程。其中MArchStudies (Advanced Architectural Studies)主要提供有关建筑学方面更高级的知识和技巧的讲授和研究,而MSc in Computer Aided Environmental Design (CAED)则侧重于利用计算机的辅助作用应用于环境设计的技巧,最后MA in Urban Design则是针对于城市规划方面,特别是建筑周围环境的设计研究。

    建筑设计非专业性的“公关手段”

    第一,“本合同以英文为准”。这说明我们施工单位,所眼见的中文表达方式全部不具法律认可的“唯一性”,一定要看英文合同,而且不光是合同中的英文,来往文件中的英文,也要仔细看清。我们送审的材料认定单,包括任何的任何文件,外方管理人或设计师看后,无论同意与否,都会签名返回,但请大家一定要看清楚除了名字外,批复栏中还有没有英文单词或句子,有的话,仔细翻译一下,不要按国内思维,认为字签了就是同意。举个例子,在一份材料送审单上,对方签字后并写下reject……译成中文是“拒绝、否决、驳回”的意思,我们不知就里,把对方reject的材料用上去,就白费工夫,业主要返工,我们就得认倒霉。

      第二,“本合同内所有有歧义、有冲突的内容,均按照最严格的标准执行”。这就完全封闭了钻图纸、招标文件、合同文本空子,而且因漏报、错报工期,造成的经济损失,都被这句话限死。如果按合同追究违约责任,十有八九对承包商不利。

      第三,“本合同中各类文件优先次序如下”。一般合同中都会给出次序列表,每个合同略有不同。但一定要清楚,外方对工程来往信函(包括Email)的效力是很大的,甚至会大于图纸,一般来说也绝对大于我们认为的技术签证。这并不是说我们传统的签证手段不需要了,但作为一个管理人员.连email都从来不看,也从来不写不发,怎么保证你的技术签证、商务变更的合法性?你送了10个书面签证,外方不直接返回签证,而是发个Email给你,说都不予承认,你根本没有看电子信箱的习惯,就会出问题。

      第四,在外资的合同文本中,《技术规范》在施工过程中处指导的地位。我们的项目经理、项目工程师都是装饰工程的专家,可外资不要专家,要的是守合同的“专业分包”。外资合同中的《技术规范》几乎包含了工地上所有的工作项目,而且深入浅出,有较好的指导性,是最真实的“施工组织设计”。在外滩××号工程上,对方提供的《技术规范》,一是意大利文译本,中文表达比较生涩;二是要求确实较高,而且非常仔细,各种材料的配比、性能、施工顺序,检测方法,供应商联系电话都罗列详尽,且对保护建筑的很多工艺,都配了清晰的操作说明及草图。

      第五,在外资项目中,合同规定的工作程序非常重要,对工程质量的认定程序是:

      深化图纸认定——材料小样认定——加工下包(工厂)考察——1︰1施工大样认定——区域施工认定——最终质量认定。

      实际上,我们往往会忽视l︰1的施工大样认定,认为材料、图纸都定了,肯定质量没有问题。外资管理者凭什么检查质量?就凭施工大样。国内装饰工程的质量验收规范,其实很模糊,主观性很强,什么叫色差?规范里没法规定。只有用施工大样认定来解决。你在这个区域的字签了,你对色差就确认了,对所有的效果就确认了。实际上,大样因为面积不大,比较性小,相关装饰面的效果影响小,比较容易被业主接受。既然这么好的办法,而且往往都是写在合同中的,我们有什么理由不去做呢?

    设计公司模式探讨-谈谈合伙人制

    其实,在中国存在最多的是装饰公司,一般的室内设计师都以装饰公司为自己的设计平台,原因有几个:一,现今室内设计师的回报都依赖于装饰公司的施工利润.很少纯设计公司,仅以设计作为经营的.二,没有更多的模式可以借鉴,导致室内设计师即便想成立纯设计公司,在实际操作中也走了装饰公司设计师工资分配的道路.

     作为一家规模较小的室内设计公司,我们的路也经历了很多曲曲折折,从个人工作室起步,而后转为装饰公司的一部分,而后在独立成立设计服务社,而后在转为装饰设计公司,到05年开始注册合伙人设计事务所.一路走来,众多的设计师遇到的尴尬和痛楚我们都有过经历.如今我们采用的是设计师合伙人制,由于开办设计事务所的经费要求不是很高,但对设计师的自我管理以及设计师之间的团队合作的凝聚力要求是比较高的,我们在多年失败的经历后选择了合伙人制这种专业技术人员之间开办公司最常用的办法.

     下面来谈谈合伙人制.采用合伙人制的企业形式(无限责任公司)。可以说,这是一种全面与国际设计机构接轨的形式。合伙人——企业的核心,事务所发展的基础 .能不能充分发挥合伙人制度的体制活力,既发挥“合伙人公司”里“人”这个要素的优势,发挥龙头作用,发挥合力作用;又避免因为无限责任公司性质带来的潜在危险,有效控制设计业务风险?合伙人制度的本身既意味着每个合伙人都是“老板”,大家可以平等地使用事务所的资源;又意味着每个合伙人都要对设计事务所承担无限责任,每个人都可能因为一个有问题的设计而造成自己和别的合伙人倾家荡产。况且,作为一个新成立的事务所,任何形象和信誉方面的损害都会对其长期发展造成沉重打击。因此,为保证公司长期顺利发展,共同制定了严谨的合伙制度。通过制度约束,保证经营和设计工作中每个人的责任心。在梁开事务所,合伙人签订的协议,大家都共同遵守;每一个新的决议或对原有协议的修改,都充分沟通、商榷,务求征得每位合伙人的理解、同意.

    我们事务所的一些整理文字,希望对同行有所帮助:

    关于事务所实行合伙制的试行办法

    第一款 原则

                              第一条

     设计事务所是知识型的企业,设计事务所是以资本和知识支持、并以知识支持为主的企业。协调资本与知识的关系是搞好设计事务所关键所在,反之往往会导致知识型公司人员流动频繁和效益不高。

                              第二条

     合伙制是协调资本和知识关系的一种基本手段。在合伙制企业中,资本持有者和知识持有者是一种平等的合作关系,而不是雇佣和被雇佣的关系。因此,公司的收益应该在扣除成本以后,由资本和知识共同参与剩余分割。

                              第三条

     鉴于本办法试行期间的实际情况,公司采取出资者按资本的社会平均收益水平分配剩余,其他均归出知者的剩余分配办法。

     第二款 利益处分

                              第四条

     合伙人的收益是在扣除了直接成本、间接成本、投资成本和其他成以后的所得。

                              第五条

    直接成本指:合伙人承担自身和团队人员的工资、奖励、福利和经营活动中的所有费用。

                              第六条

     间接成本指:合伙人分担房租、设施使用和水电、电话、综合部门人员的部分费用。

                              第七条

     投资成本指:合伙人向出资者支付的投资费用。

                              第八条

     其他成本指:各种应交纳的税费。

                              第九条

     合伙人对团队成员的工资、奖励和福利必须有一个合法、合理的分配方案,并确定最低收益保障线。如果当月收益不足以支付成员支出和成本费用,合伙人可以以个人的名义向公司提出借款,用以上述支付,借款必须还本付息。如果当月的收入超出了必要的支出,合伙人应当按收入的一定比例提取资本公积。资本公积的所有权归合伙人,用于以丰补欠。任何人包括公司无权使用和支配。

                            第十条

      属于合伙人管理团队成员的人事关系由合伙人负责,其人事关系性质同公司是一种委托管理关系。其人事关系原则上同合伙人一起进退,相关约定在用工合约中另行明确。

                            第十一条

    合伙人参与公司的剩余分割是企业内部分配方式的变革尝试,合伙人不承担公司法人在企业经营方面的损益责任。

    第三款 公司与合伙人

                          第十二条

     设计事务所是法人,是设计事务所民事行为的责任主体。合伙人的行为在设计事务所相关法律和规定的框架下进行,并向公司和公司的代表负责。

                        第十三条

     设计事务所确定的合伙制是一种机制改革的尝试,并不改变设计事务所的实质。设计事务所与合伙人之间确定的合作关系受双方签订的正式契约的调整。

                        第十四条

    合伙人在享受合伙权力的同时,应该承担相应的责任。

    合伙人的权力指:合伙人按契约规定享受的在人事、分配和经营业务等方面权力;

    合伙人的责任指:合伙人既要维护自身利益,同时也必须维护团队成员和公司的合法权益;必须按照规定向公司报批业务发展方向和具体内容;经公司批准,然后代表公司签订业务合约并认真实施;按规定扣除成本、交纳费用后合理分配剩余;维护员工的合法权益包括员工接受培训和分享资源的权力;接受公司的协调,特别是在合伙人包括合伙入团队同其他合伙人和合伙人团队之间、合伙人和合伙人团队同支持部门之间发生冲突时。

                        第十五条

     一旦合伙人和合伙人团队同公司利益之间发生利益冲突,只接受双方契约的调整,不接受公司外部和其他形式的调整;而双方的契约在试行期间,可以以每三个月为一个时间单位,以便有足够的时间和空间进行协商和调整。

     第四款 合伙人资格的取得和取消

                        第十六条

    合伙人在向设计事务所提交合伙的书面报告,经设计事务所审查通过并经过三个月的实践后方能确认。设计事务所保留对合伙人资格经常性的考察。合伙人违反规则,设计事务所有权依据事实对其进行教育、批评、处分直至取消合伙人的合伙资格;合伙人如主动提出取消合伙关系,应提前一个月向设计事务所递交书面报告,经批准后,做好各项移交工作(包括妥善处理好属于合伙人管理团队的成员关系然后离开。

                        第十七条

     设计事务所鼓励合伙人在条件成熟以后离开公司自己创业或到新的公司担任各种职务。公司将尽可能地提供帮助并保证不设置任何障碍。

      第五款 试行与修改

                        第十八条

    本办法经协调小组讨论通过并经设计事务所全体员工协商后试行,试行时间为三个月,期满后修改,以此类推。试行期暂定为两年。

     

    合伙人享有哪些权利?
      答:根据《中华人民共和国合伙企业法》和《民法通则》第二章第五节有关个人合伙的规定,个人合伙一经依法成立,即受到国家法律保护,在个人合伙中,各合伙人必须按照合伙协议,享有权利、承担义务。各合伙人的主要权利有: 1、合伙人投入的财产和经营积累的财产,由合伙人统一管理和使用。如:合伙人提供的厂房、机械设备等,各合伙人在共同经营、共同劳动中有使用的权利;合伙经营积累的财产,归合伙人共有。非经全体合伙人同意,任何人不得擅自转让、抽出、处分共同所有的财产。 2、个人合伙的经营活动,由合伙人共同决定,合伙人有执行和监督的权利。 3、根据合伙经营的需要,合伙人有权推举负责人,负责合伙经营的主要工作。 4、合伙人对于合伙经营所取得的收益,享有按约定分享的权利。 5、合伙人对于偿还合伙债务超过自己应承担数额的,有向其他合伙人追偿的权利

     

     

     

     

    看看一些知名的设计事务所的运作吧,虽然我们还不能这么系统完善的运作合伙人制度,但看SOM建筑师事务所的运作,还是对我们这些希望自行开办事务所的室内设计师有很多提示作用的.

    SOM公司的职员从一般设计师开始,主要有以下几个层次:一般设计师→管理层或主设计师→副合伙人→合伙人。SOM公司采用上述管理机制,不同于有的美国建筑设计公司是所有雇员都拥有公司,也不同于有些建筑设计公司是所有雇员都不拥有公司而代表其拥有者工作。

      SOM公司有另外3名合伙人成立的一个办公室,对公司提名的合伙人人选进行考核,及对现有合伙人工作等情况进行考评。合伙人的股份根据其工作量进行变化。合伙人资格不是终身制,如果有70%合伙人同意,则可解除某一合伙人的资格。新加入的合伙人,如没有购买公司股份的经济实力,可以不占有股份。如果有合伙人达到退休年龄(该公司合伙人入伙时约定,65岁时合伙人退休),不可以再拥有股份,公司会在5年内将其股份买回来。另外一些合伙人制公司还有顾问合伙人,顾问合伙人不能代表公司签合同,也不参与分红,是以支付工资形式出现的。

      图纸签字和责任管理

      SOM设计图纸上每个专业只有1人签字负责,而且并不是公司的注册建筑师、注册工程师都有图纸签字权,该公司只有每个工程的管理合伙人才能签字出图,并承担责任。美国许多州政府对图纸责任都有严格规定,如伊利诺伊州规定管理合伙人签字时要注明,图纸是在他管理监督下制作出来的。设计公司出现法律诉讼时,诉讼对象是建筑设计企业,企业承担经济方面的责任,签字人(或管理合伙人)承担刑事方面的责任。如果建筑责任是由建筑管理合伙人负责,如结构有问题,由签字的结构工程师负责,设备的问题由签字的设备工程师负责。一般的工程建筑管理合伙人签字,其他专业都是副合伙人或注册人员签字,并对自己签字的工作负责。如果因公司内的合伙人个人原因造成质量问题,公司承担经济责任,SOM不再追究合伙人的经济责任,但刑事责任要个人承担。公司规定,各专业的合伙人都必须对所属专业审图。目前,该公司只有30名合伙人才能在该公司的图纸上签字。其他人不能签字。如果有些专业没有合伙人,则由该专业副合伙人签字,合伙人审核。

      在美国,法律责任上是先追究管理合伙人,然后再逐级追究责任。美国很多建筑师事务所是只做建筑专业设计,业主与建筑专业事务所签订全部设计合同,建筑专业事务所再与结构、机电等事务所签订分包合同。如果出问题,业主起诉总包的建筑专业事务所,建筑专业事务所再起诉结构、机电事务所。另外,也有业主委托建筑、结构、机电专业事务所并签订合同,这种情况则建筑、结构、机电专业事务所各负各的责任。 

     

    当然,如今我们的合伙人制度不能与建筑师事务所的有限合伙人制度相提并论,但总是为合伙人制度事务所在上海室内装饰行业的发展迈出了实验性的一步,05年成立了上海艺念之间室内设计事务所,为合伙人企业,如今为上海唯一一家取得上海市室内装饰设计资质的设计事务所.如今的几年运作也受到了上海室内装饰行业协会有关领导的肯定,作为上海室内装饰行业协会唯一一家纯设计事务所,一直得到行业领导的关心和支持.

    When you decide to realize an image like this, you have to know that the modeling part is the simplest.All the objects of the scene are modelled in Max with polygonal instruments. The coffee mug, the saucers, the glasses and the fluids were created with lathe tool and then converted to editable polys for texturing. The eggs are simple geospheres with a lot of subdivisions.

    There are three Vray lights with multiplier at 3, 3,5 and 4. All have “Store with Irradiance map” activated. For a great result I placed also a HDR image called “Kitchen” and downloadable from Paul Debevec web site with 0,5 multiplier.

    Speed vs Quality in Vray:

    If there is one thing that can truly control the balance of speed versus quality in Vray it is image sampling.  Image sampling is basically part of anti aliasing. 

     This tab can take your renderings from 20 second quick test to a 30 mins high quality render without having to adjust any other aspect of the rendering.  

    They control anything from fine detailed textured, to glossy reflections and refraction, to aspects like depth of field and motion blur, all at once.  

    This tutorial helps to make sense of each one and simplify the process so that the user can easily and optimally control the quality of the rendering

     in the most efficient way.

    Sample scene requirements: Max 8 or higher, Vray 1.5rc3 or higher. 

     All textures provided except HDR.  

    Users must provide their own HDRI for testing.

    PRICE EARNING RATIO

    Price-Earnings Ratio (P/E Ratio)

    What does it Mean? A valuation ratio of a company's current share price compared to its per-share earnings.

    Calculated as:

     

    For example, if a company is currently trading at $43 a share and earnings over the last 12 months were $1.95 per share, the P/E ratio for the stock would be 22.05 ($43/$1.95).

    EPS is usually from the last four quarters (trailing P/E), but sometimes it can be taken from the estimates of earnings expected in the next four quarters (projected or forward P/E). A third variation uses the sum of the last two actual quarters and the estimates of the next two quarters.
     
    Also sometimes known as "price multiple" or "earnings multiple". 
     
    Investopedia Says... In general, a high P/E suggests that investors are expecting higher earnings growth in the future compared to companies with a lower P/E. However, the P/E ratio doesn't tell us the whole story by itself. It's usually more useful to compare the P/E ratios of one company to other companies in the same industry, to the market in general or against the company's own historical P/E. It would not be useful for investors using the P/E ratio as a basis for their investment to compare the P/E of a technology company (high P/E) to a utility company (low P/E) as each industry has much different growth prospects.
     
    The P/E is sometimes referred to as the "multiple", because it shows how much investors are willing to pay per dollar of earnings. If a company were currently trading at a multiple (P/E) of 20, the interpretation is that an investor is willing to pay $20 for $1 of  current earnings.

    It is important that investors note an important problem that arises with the P/E measure, and to avoid basing a decision on this measure alone. The denominator (earnings) is based on an accounting measure of earnings that is susceptible to forms of manipulation, making the quality of the P/E only as good as the quality of the underlying earnings number.

    You've got to find what you love,' Jobs says

    This is the text of the Commencement address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, delivered on June 12, 2005.

    I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.

    The first story is about connecting the dots.

    I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?

    It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

    And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

    It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:

    Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.

    None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

    Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

    再次说明的是,你在向前展望的时候不可能将这些片断串连起来;你只能在回顾的时候将点点滴滴串连起来。所以你必须相信这些片断会在你未来的某一天串连起来。你必须要相信某些东西:你的勇气、目的、生命、因缘。这个过程从来没有令我失望(let me down),只是让我的生命更加地与众不同而已。

    My second story is about love and loss.

    I was lucky – I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation - the Macintosh - a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.

    I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me – I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.

    I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

    During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I retuned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.

    I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.

    My third story is about death.

    When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

    Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything – all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

    About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.

    I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm fine now.

    This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:

Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

    Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

    你们的时间很有限, 所以不要将他们浪费在重复其他人的生活上。不要被教条束缚,那意味着你和其他人思考的结果一起生活。不要被其他人喧嚣的观点掩盖你真正的内心的声音。还有最重要的是, 你要有勇气去听从你直觉和心灵的指示——它们在某种程度上知道你想要成为什么样子,所有其他的事情都是次要的。

    When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.

    Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.
